Neuroscience of Love

Last night attended a public lecture on ‘Neuroscience of Love’, by Oxford Evolutionary Anthropologist- Anna Machin, in the Hare and Hound Pub. It was good to know that Oxytocin, Dopamine, Serotonin and Beta endorphins are the key neurochemicals involved in formation and binding of a relationship between two persons. As soon as you are attracted to someone, anxiety shoots up, this triggers oxytocin release to process the anxiety better, Dopamine kicks in and motivates the motor circuits to approach the other person, and based on the transactions the questionable Serotonin plays the hide and seek games and if all climaxes well together Beta endorphins are released for the formation of perfect addictive journey together. And there is a lot of investment going around in genetics research in finding out the genes responsible for , theory of mind and empathy, affinity , oxytocin receptor gene which are supposed to have a measurable impact on relationships. As always the case for any scientific thinking about a topic, there was a lot of speculation based on some facts and plenty of room for imagination. But what interested me more was the same key mechanisms are involved in people who fall in love with movie stars, literary characters, gods and goddesses and stuff and the speaker called this mechanism as ‘Parasocial’ love. I was getting genuinely worried if I would fall in Love with this new hypothesis. Before the signal anxiety kicked in, started walking towards home..

Should I follow the vicissitudes of my fate and learn the ‘technologies of self’ to liberate myself from the angst of my situation on my own. 

Or should I surrender to an institute to start naming all my receptors and the endless ways to keep blocking them with antagonist medicines, while the guru therapist figures out a way to annihilate my dangers and the ‘castration anxiety’.

Once upon a time, following the union of male principle and a female principle, the man/woman was born out of cosmic mom. Some called the mom a Shunya and to some it was a Big Bang. All the unnamed emotions seething in him, he called it as vibrations. He was able to turn off those vibrations over a period of time using the coldness of logic. Learning the symbols of language and following the rules of language made him cool and manipulative. He took pride in staying closer to the truth using the new found love for reason. When he was excessively cool and manipulative, all his chakras halted. The congested viscera gave him a variety of ailments. When he had enough of the pain, he was seeking the cosmic emotions to flood him back and warm him up. He was dreaming of all the good times he had with his mom. The chakras never revved up again. He poked with his heel, prodded with his breath, stretched his muscles upside down, avoided the negative Pranic food only to see, the excesses of logic and rules he made for recovering the chakras had halted them again. He / she then had to choose ‘reason and pain’ or ‘warmth and the mom’ or both.

Miss Orlando’s world:

Dr Dee suggested Miss Orlando that she should consider psychological therapies in addition to the medications she has been taking on and off for the past 6 years as some of the key vulnerabilities have not changed a bit. He promised the process of self discovery is a certain possibility with therapies. 

Miss Orlando acknowledged that six years of carrying a diagnosis was not so tedious and more easier than she thought. Born in Srilanka , growing up in Canada, diagnosed in USA and living in UK presents itself with some new challenges. Her main objection was against receiving psychological assessments or therapies in Srilanka. In particular when she said the anonymity, the alienation, privacy and confidentiality of the individualistic societies is where she would like to open up and dissolve her self and make the process of self discovery feasible. She wouldn’t trust therapists of Srilanka for the fear opening up In collectivist societies always meant subscribing to an invisible power game. One of her new pet paranoia that came to life on that session. 

At the end of the session, Dr Dee started searching for the last reported ‘Aha’ moment that made the smooth muscles walk away from the teats, wine glasses, cigarette butts, fire, flux and comfort foods without disturbing the universe. That’s when east - west paradigms started melting away for Dr Dee.
